Skum’s Tommy Craig rocked the house joining friend Pat Travers to a standing room only crowd at the Port Salerno Seafood Festival in beautiful, downtown Port Salerno, Florida last Saturday night.

Travers headlined the festival closing out the show at the Twisted Tuna with a blistering 90 minute set that included all the hits and a few new songs he is about to release. The show, in terms of Travers show, was an epic display of raw unabashed musical power as the three piece line up brought a sense of urgency to the stage. Many are calling this one of Travers’ best live performances of the past 20 years.

Tommy and Hart dined at the Twisted Tuna where they discussed the TV Show as well as the finishing of the album over a 4 course meal of freshly made crawfish dip, pan seared tuna with a cream caper sauce (‘simply excellent’ added Tommy..), several Sushi entrees including a Fire Dragon Roll with freshly cut jalapeño made especially for the two and for the main course fresh Maine Lobster in a butter dill sauce.

“Pleased with the show,” added Tommy. “The yacht was a great touch for the backstage are and the private dinner was productive.”

Tommy Craig, John Eaton and Hart Baur joined the party backstage at the the Eddie Money concert this past Saturday Night in beautiful downtown Pompano Beach, Florida. In what was one of the most important concerts of the young season, Money performed to a sold out, standing-room only crowd that spanned three generation of fans and included opening guest Starship, fronted by Mickey Thomas.

The band is currently in talks for the TV show to follow the release of their documentary ‘Skum Rocks!” and wanted to stop by and talk with Eddie, as well as show their support.

As far as outdoor rock shows go, this one was one of the all-time greats. International celebrity journalist Nigel Pandemonium was backstage, as was concert icon Bobby Newcastle. “Smashing show!” said Pandemonium, “Eddie was in great form and it was a absolutely splendid performance by Mickey. I spoke with Eddie afterward and he was very happy with the evening. He told me ‘Nigel it was a great crowd and we fed off that.”

Even Bobby Newcastle agreed. “Great show. Yeah Eddie was on. Starship impressed me as well.”

Things got off to a great start when Starship hit the stage at 8pm sharp. Starship front man Mickey Thomas was spot on as they belted out hit after hit sounding as if it were 1987 all over again.

Skum drummer Tommy Craig said “Starship just killed it. Mickey was off the charts vocally and Stephanie blew me away with ‘White Rabbit”. And it was just so awesome to see Eddie again. What a guy. We were talking about the TV show and he was just in a great mood. Then he gets up on stage and just brought the place down. Great show.”

Mickey Thomas added, ” It was great to see the guys out at the show, but I thought Bruke was coming. He texted he was going to make it.”  (Pat Burke was unable to attend the show as he was committed to a charity event in Raleigh the same night.)

Eddie hit all stops during his 75 minute set as the crowd ate up his one liners along with

the hits. “Two Tickets to Paradise”, “I think I’m in Love”, I Wanna Go Back”  kept the crowd on their feet and he raised the roof with his encore ‘Shakin’.

“Eddie Money personifies what this business is all about,” said lead singer Hart Baur. “He is not only one of the classiest guys on tour, but just a total performer. Writes great songs, great hooks, has amazing rapport with the crowd and then just when you think he can’t get better he whips out the sax and blows the place away.”

The band discussed the possibility of collaborating on on a remake of Money’s classic 1984 hit “Shakin” in what guitarist John Eaton said would be an “epic collaboration.”

“It was great to see the guys again,” added Eddie. “We hadn’t seen each other since we played on the same bill in 2015 and you know how I feel about them. Love them. Let’s get this done! Song is going to rock.”

Skum lead bassist Pat Burke has opened up his long awaited theme restaurant ‘The Town Tavern’ in Boone, North Carolina. Wanting to create a rock and roll / sports haven for friends,  fans and celebrities alike, Pat has created a concept that is sure to catch on country wide.

“Boone has a lot of world class acts that play here at ASU,” said Pat. “What I wanted to do was to create a place that has the atmosphere of backstage, but one where everyone can be a part of and I think we have done that here.”

Alicia Silverstone

Boone is quickly becoming the Aspen of the Appalachians with many celebrities making their way through the picturesque mountain town. Many celebs such as Alicia Silverstone, Mike Love and John Oates, to name a few have been rumored to be seen there.

“I am not going to comment of who has been in, but lets just you see a lot of very familiar faces here,” added Pat. “I’ll leave it at that.”

Iconic rock journalist Bobby Newcastle has been in on two occasions when in town. “The Town Tavern is one of the best places to come to after a show,” said Newcastle. “It is like a continuation of backstage with much better food.”

John Oates

It has been well documented that the band is very tight with the celebrity world, so this just fits especially with the influx of celebrities coming into Boone. With the Beach Boys coming into town later this summer look to see longtime Skum fan Mike Love there with his bandmates as there is a reservation for a table of seven already in the book.

“I am glad to see Pat getting this opened,” said rhythm bassist Todd Middlebrook. “He has a flair for great food and the menu is spectacular.”

Pat with Alice Cooper and the band,

Pat with Alice Cooper and the band,

I wanted to branch out with my brand,” said Pat. “Hart and Todd have successful businesses, Tommy has his fragrance and John has his line of marital aids, so I just figured it was time for me to do something.”

When in Boone stop by the The Town Tavern, but make sure you call ahead for reservations!

Fans to Vote for the ‘Drumbeat’ Bottle Design!

Featured

Tommy Craig

Here we go. Tommy has announced that he wants you, the fans to decide which bottle he chooses for his signature fragrance “Drumbeat.”

Option #1:

# 1

# 1

This design comes from the famous Icelandic sculptor Olafur Eliasson, who used a full body cast made of  Belgian molding wax in which he immersed Tommy into  a vat of warm wax making the mold.

Olafur Eliasson

Olafur Eliasson

“I wanted to capture Tommy’s strength as a man and as an artist,” said Eliasson “I am pleased with the outcome and only hope he chooses my vision for “Drumbeat.”

“It was great working with Olafur,” said Tommy. “We sent ideas back and forth and I was able to meet him in a studio in Orlando and really liked what he was doing. If this one is selected, I will be happy with that.”

Option #2:

# 2

# 2

Option # 2 is a simple design that conveys the simplicity of a simple beat. Designed by London’s Matt Knox, this bottle is something in which rock fans across the globe can identify. The seamless lines of the cylinder shape take from the symmetry of a bass drum. The backbone of Tommy’s drum kit.

To those who have seen Tommy Craig play live, you realize right away that the soul of his artistry is the bass unit,” said Knox. “So I wanted to incorporate that into the design. I think it is rather stunning in its simplicity to be honest.”

“I like it,” added Tommy.

Option #3:

# 3

# 3

In what Thai artist  Kae Chonglada calls the ‘Black Knight” may be the one most innovative designs for a fragrance yet.  Known for her ‘Modern Asian Watercolors”, Chonglada wanted to do something bold and yet sexy.

 Kae Chonglada

Kae Chonglada”

I enjoy symbolism and listening to Tommy’s work I knew what I heard. Walter (Bruning) was very instrumental in getting me this opportunity and I was thankful for the chance to work on something outside of my comfort zone. ”

“What Kae did with this is simply spectacular. I am glad the fans are choosing.” said Tommy. ” Going to be some hard decisions made for sure.”

Added Walter, “I think Kae’s work speaks for itself. Very talented and I hoped she gets the nod.”

Tommy Craig in Discussions to Launch Fragrance

Skum drummer Tommy Craig is close to fulfilling his lifelong dream with his announcement earlier this week that he is in discussions to launch his signature brand of cologne “Drumbeat”.

“My idea for “Drumbeat” is to create a masculine fragrance that captures  the spirit of rock and roll with a fusion  of citrus and a touch of Nordic musk.” said Tommy. “I think the fans will love it and it will allow me the opportunity to branch my brand outside of the band a bit.”

Paris Hilton

During his trip to  Hollywood for the Hollywood screening of the film “Skum Rocks!”, Tommy met with several people who were interested in bringing his ideas to reality. It is rumored that Paris Hilton is one of the silent backers of the venture, but this has not been confirmed.

“I’m an not at liberty to say who is involved in this,” said Tommy. “But rest assured it is some pretty big names. especially with the potential TV show.  It is how we roll.”

Ximon Lee

Ximon Lee

“I heard that Tommy was looking into creating his own fragrance,” said rhythm bassist Todd, ” So I introduced him to  Ximon (Lee) backstage at the Miami Premiere and they kind of hit it off. Ximon has a lot of contacts in the world of fragrance.”

(Editor’s note: Ximon Lee designed Todd’s red carpet outfit.)

“Ximon was awesome and knew a lot of people who were interested in seeing where this could go and he made a few calls, ” added Tommy. “It seemed that I was on the phone with almost everyone in the industry. Pretty stoked, nothing is confirmed, but the ball is rolling as they say. I’m reviewing bottle designs this week.”

The fragrance release party will be held at Longdogger’s in Melbourne, Florida later this summer or early fall.

“Looking forward to the release party. Will make sure that they serve the tempura shrimp with a lime-mango salsa that is to die for,” said Tommy.  “Will be a great night and hope to see all the fans out for that one.”

“We are proud that Tommy is finally doing this,” said lead bassist Pat Burke. “He has been talking about doing  this for years.”

Jon Huertas of ABC’s hit ‘Castle‘ was in town for some meetings with Sony Music and wanted to stop by to hang with the guys.

“I’m loving what these guys have done and can’t wait to see “Skum Rocks” out in theaters,” said Jon.  “This took balls to pull off and they did it. Just wish I could have been here for the March 5h show.”

“When I heard that Jon was in town I was stoked,” said lead singer Hart Baur. “Castle is one of the only shows I watch and his work on the show is second to none. Plus,  he is an amazing musician to boot, so it was great to sit back in a relaxed atmosphere and throw around some ideas.”

In town to meet with Sony Music Latin Executives about several upcoming projects for his indie music label MIDRATS Entertainment, Jon was excited to see what the band had on the horizon as well, as a collaboration of some sort is a possibility.

“Big fan of Castle, and would love to get into the studio with Jon at some point, “said lead guitarist John Eaton. “He is a very creative and innovative artist and to those who know us, know those are the people we like to work with.”

Jon & Hart

Having secured a Sony imprint deal, MIDRATS will serve as a platform for Jon and a new series he’s developing that is Latin-based, where all original music will be produced and distributed through MIDRATS and Sony as well as a new Music endeavor with Seamus Dever who plays his partner on ABC’s Castle. “I am really excited about the future,” added Jon. “Things are moving.”

While mum on an eighth season of Castle, he did say “it is a great cast and we love working with each other, so if we get one more season, than great.”

“Jon is an extremely talented performer, anyone who has seen or heard his work knows this. Was great to catch up and hopefully we can do something in the future, schedules permitting, of course ” added Hart.

Stana Katric

The band gave Jon a vintage concert T-Shirt as well as a tank top from Tommy Craig to give to his Castle co-star Stana Katic. “We used to hang out in LA,” said drummer Tommy Craig. ” She is a great kid and I wanted her to have the tank as a wedding gift.”

“A great lunch,” added Jon.

Jon dined on a hamburger panini with mozzarella cheese and grilled onions, accompanied by seasoned fresh cut fries, while John went with a classic Rueben with potato salad topped with sprinkled paprika. Hart chose the panini as well, but added fresh mushrooms and a side of cole slaw. “The mushrooms really make that.” he said.

Skum to Play Budokan in 2015?

Tokyo's Budokan Hall

Tokyo’s Budokan Hall

With the impending mass release of the soon to be cult classic ‘Skum Rocks!” narrated by Alice Cooper there has been a lot of international interest in the film.  While negotiations with the yet to be named US Distributor heat up, a Japanese company has entered the bidding war in an attempt to get the rights to the film for a country wide theatrical release in Japan, complete with a star studded Tokyo Premiere.

"Live at Budokan"

“Live at Budokan”

The Japanese firm is wanting to get the band to sign a one show deal to play the famed Budokan arena, made famous by Cheap Trick in the late 1970’s with their epic album “Cheap Trick – Live at Budokan”.

Arata Haruki is trying to secure the band to play the venue and is in contact with several other major US bands to create what he calls a “Massive Bill”.  It was not clear, but Mr. Haruki alluded to possibly bringing Cheap Trick for the night to as he put it ‘bring it full circle.”

Arata Haruk

Arata Haruk

“Skum had a good underground following in Japan, especially in the southern regions, particularly in Kyushu and Shikoku,” said Mr. Haruki.  “If this film premieres in Tokyo, I am convinced we can sell out Budokan and make this a great night for Japanese – American rock and roll. We would want Loudness to play as well.”

“We would love to play Budokan,” said rhythm bassist Todd Middlebrook. “We would love to do a live album there as well. Why not? Right?”

The talk of a “Skum Live at Budokan” dates back to 1988 when the band was attempting to capitalize on their surging underground popularity.  “We would get these letters from the Japanese chicks with these polaroids, I mean pretty graphic stuff,” said lead guitarist John Eaton. “I was like, dude we got to do a Live at Budokan or something like that.”

While no date or dates have been even formally discussed, the band has spoken with Mr. Haruki on two occasions and he flew to Miami for the Miami premiere of “Skum Rocks!” and was backstage at the concert.

“It is a little early to start calling Rolling Stone about this,” said lead bassist Pat Burke. “But look, we know our rock and roll history and what this would mean to our fans. We need a live album to follow ‘Lost’ so to me and this is just me talking off the cuff, this just makes perfect fucking sense.”

“Do I want to play Budokan? Of course.” added lead singer Hart Baur. “Will it happen? I do not know. Arata and I had a really good talk back stage and what he said was that if he can get Loudness and maybe Cheap Trick, and we do this the night after or before the Tokyo premiere. Mark (Brasel) said we can record one of the greatest live albums ever, and you know I am down for that.”

“I thought Abbey Road was epic. This is blowing my mind,” said drummer Tommy Craig. “I hear we will get two special guest to join us on stage as well. This is what I have come to expect with this band. Greatness.”

The Fabulous Miss Wendy, who recently joined the band on stage in Miami was mentioned as being one of the special guests in Tokyo. “I have always wanted to play in Japan, and can’t wait to rock it!!!!”

SKUM ROCKS! Miami Premiere

Featured

In what is being described as the most over the top film premiere in Miami’s storied history, the long awaited debut of the rock and roll documentary “Skum Rocks!” took place at Miami Beach’s historical Colony Theatre on Lincoln Road March 5th.

The red carpet was filled with stars as Eddie Money, Frankie Banali with Quiet Riot, the Fabulous Miss Wendy, Phoenix Benjamin, Scan Man, and of course, the entire Skum crew arrived on the scene. Lincoln Road became pure rock and roll chaos as the six limousine caravan unloaded an army of celebrities into the star crazed group of fans, erupting into an explosion of flashes, screams, and cell phone selfies as the stars made their way into the crowd. Throngs of people crowded and rushed the celebs as the red carpet turned into an impromptu meet and greet, and Eddie Money was heard to say, “Is this turnout great or what?”

Skum’s lead bassist, Pat Burke, said, “This is exactly what we wanted. The chance to give our hometown Miami fans an inside look at what we’re all about. Eddie, Frankie, all of us in Skum, everyone was having a great time, and I don’t think I ever took more photos with fans—ever. Eddie said he hadn’t seen this much fan excitement in years, and couldn’t wait to see the film.”

The fabled Lincoln Road Colony Theatre, built in the 1930’s, was packed, with the premiere sold out before show time, and a handful of additional tickets left at the box office were gone once the window opened up. Some tickets were sold on Craigslist for twice their face value, and there were reports of ticket scalping on Lincoln Road, though no arrests were made by the Miami Beach Police Department.

“It was the wildest red carpet I’ve ever seen,” said Skum drummer Tommy Craig. “And I was on the red carpet in Hollywood the night Brad Pitt was attacked! But this one blew that one away. This one was sheer madness.”

The Fabulous Miss Wendy, who has a cameo in the film and was to join Skum on stage at the Grand Central after party, said, “I’m from LA where they do premieres, but this was the craziest of any I’ve seen. The crowd was huge, with the stars and fans all mingled together. It was like Lincoln Road became just a huge backstage.”

Rock journalist icon Bobby Newcastle tweeted, “I was backstage having a sit down with Scan Man when everyone arrived, and I heard it was a madhouse out there. Eddie (Money) told me later it was one of the coolest entrances he’d ever been a part of, and that’s saying something.”

“It rocked, bro,’ added Phoenix Benjamin.

The movie house was rocking once the premiere started, as scene after scene delivered true laughs, and the fans were loving every second of it. “This is a great moment for the band in many ways,” said Skum lead singer Hart Baur. “We finally get to tell our story in front of our hometown. There’s been a lot of talk about the film and how this will be our legacy, but I say this is just the beginning of it, and I can’t wait to get on stage later and blow the place away.”

“Skum Rocks!” director Clay Westervelt was blown away, both by the size and enthusiasm of the crowd and by the response. “This is a huge premiere for an independent film—one of the biggest I’ve seen. But the real gauge for me was how the crowd of close to four hundred in the audience reacted. To say it went over well is a vast understatement.”

“Killed it,” said Skum rhythm bassist Todd Middlebrook. “Straight up killed it. Bang on.”

Forget everything you’ve heard about the difficulties filming “SKUM ROCKS!” Forget the troubles they had, including the misbehavior of two of its spotlighted stars. The memorable thing about “Skum Rocks!” is that it’s not only stellar entertainment, it’s one of the most important rock and roll films of our day.
